OpenAI has announced the expansion of its ChatGPT advertising pilot to several new international markets, signaling the company’s growing focus on monetization and global ad adoption. The latest rollout will introduce ads within ChatGPT to users in countries including the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea in the coming weeks.
The expansion follows OpenAI’s initial advertising tests in the United States earlier this year, which were later extended to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. According to the company, the pilot is designed to support broader access to ChatGPT while maintaining user trust and privacy. OpenAI stated that advertisements will remain clearly separated from chatbot responses and will not influence the answers generated by the AI platform.
As part of the initiative, ads will primarily target logged-in adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers. Paid tiers such as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education will continue to remain ad-free. OpenAI emphasized that conversations with ChatGPT will stay private and will not be shared with advertisers, while businesses will only receive aggregated campaign performance insights instead of access to personal user interactions.
The company is also expanding the tools available for advertisers. OpenAI recently introduced a beta self-serve Ads Manager platform in the United States, allowing businesses to create and manage campaigns directly inside ChatGPT. New advertising features include cost-per-click bidding and improved campaign measurement systems aimed at attracting companies of all sizes, from startups to large global brands. The initiative is being supported through partnerships with major advertising agencies and technology firms.
Industry analysts view the advertising expansion as a major strategic shift for OpenAI as it seeks to diversify revenue streams amid rising infrastructure and AI development costs. Reports suggest the company is targeting billions of dollars in advertising revenue over the next few years, positioning ChatGPT as a potential challenger in the digital advertising ecosystem currently dominated by major technology firms. However, experts also note that the long-term success of AI-powered advertising will depend on user trust, ad relevance, and the ability of platforms to maintain transparency and neutrality.
