The Telangana government has announced its plan to create India’s first and largest Artificial Intelligence (AI) city on the outskirts of Hyderabad. This groundbreaking project is designed to foster a vibrant AI ecosystem and attract leading global companies to establish their AI centers in the region.
State Information Technology Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu shared the news on Monday, emphasizing Hyderabad’s transformation into the “AI capital of India.” He said, “Hyderabad has been known as a top information technology (IT) hub in the country. Now, we want to promote it as the AI capital of India.”
The Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) has designated 200 acres along the Outer Ring Road in the Maheshwaram, Serilingampally, Chevella, and Ibrahimpatnam mandals for this AI city development. This location is notably larger than similar projects in other states. Sridhar Babu elaborated, “Though there are similar proposals in other states, they are yet to take off. For example, the Uttar Pradesh government also announced in December 2023 that it would set up the AI city at Lucknow, but it has not yet been grounded. It has allocated only 40 acres of land and it was projected to be completed in 2030. But the proposed AI city in Hyderabad is five times bigger than the one at Lucknow and will be completed by 2028, making it the first AI city of India.”
The Telangana government will lay the foundation stone for the AI city in September. Ahead of this, a Global AI Summit will be held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre on September 5 and 6. Sridhar Babu announced, “As a precursor to the event, we are hosting a Global AI Summit at Hyderabad International Convention Centre on September 5 and 6.” The summit, themed “Making AI Work for Everyone,” will delve into how AI can benefit and empower society, featuring keynote addresses and sessions from global AI experts, technology leaders, policymakers, and academicians. Over 50 speakers will engage 2,000 delegates from various sectors in discussions on AI’s potential for social good, safe AI practices, and its role in driving innovation.
Minister Sridhar Babu, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, and other senior officials will visit the United States from August 3-11 to meet with top global IT players, inviting them to the Global AI Summit and seeking their investments in the AI city. “We are going to meet top global IT players and invite them to the Global AI Summit, besides seeking their investments in the AI city,” he stated.
The envisioned AI city will host companies from various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, law enforcement, and mobility. Sridhar Babu added, “Our government has co-designed the AI framework document with the help of pioneers of industry, academia, start-ups, and policy advisors to provide a conducive environment – supporting the ideation, development, and responsible deployment of Artificial Intelligence for social impact.”
