The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) has officially launched, enabling young professionals nationwide to gain hands-on experience and boost employability. Senior officials from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs recently engaged with the first batch of interns and their supervisors in a virtual meeting, highlighting the importance of mentorship and practical training.
Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Budget speech and launched on October 3, the scheme spans all 656 districts of India. The year-long internship emphasizes practical work, constituting over 50% of the program. Participants receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 and a one-time grant of ₹6,000 via Direct Benefit Transfer.
With over 6.2 lakh applications, companies have actively selected and begun training interns. Major firms such as ONGC, Vedanta, Titan, and Maruti Suzuki have welcomed participants at diverse locations.
One inspiring intern, Karnakula Varalakshmi, a 23-year-old mother, joined Avanti Feeds in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, to fulfill her aspirations. The scheme’s focus is to provide meaningful work experience, equipping interns with the skills to thrive in India’s dynamic workforce, a move widely applauded by the corporate sector.
