OpenAI and Meta Platforms have reportedly engaged in separate discussions with India’s Reliance Industries to explore potential collaborations aimed at enhancing their artificial intelligence presence in the country, according to a report by The Information.
Possible Collaboration Between OpenAI and Reliance Jio
One of the discussions involved a potential partnership between OpenAI and Reliance Jio for the distribution of ChatGPT. The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter, also reported that OpenAI has internally deliberated on reducing the ChatGPT subscription price from $20 per month to just a few dollars. However, it remains unclear whether this pricing strategy was discussed with Reliance.
Reliance’s Plans for AI Model Deployment
Reliance has explored the possibility of offering OpenAI’s models to enterprise customers via an application programming interface (API). The discussions also included the prospect of hosting and operating OpenAI models within India to ensure that local customer data remains within the country.
AI Integration in Reliance’s Upcoming Data Center
The conglomerate has also considered deploying AI models from both OpenAI and Meta within its upcoming three-gigawatt data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The facility, which Reliance claims will be the world’s largest data center, is expected to play a key role in the company’s AI and cloud computing initiatives.
While Meta declined to comment on the report, OpenAI and Reliance have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the discussions.
Reliance’s Expanding Digital Footprint
Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is one of India’s largest corporations with diverse business interests, including petrochemicals, oil and gas, refining, telecommunications, retail, and renewable energy. Its foray into AI infrastructure aligns with its broader strategy of digital expansion and technological innovation.
