Microsoft’s Accusations Against Google: An Analysis of Competitive Practices in Cloud Computing

Microsoft has leveled serious allegations against Google, claiming the tech giant is orchestrating a “shadow campaign” aimed at discrediting its Azure cloud business. In a detailed blog post, Rima Alaily, Microsoft’s deputy general counsel, revealed that Google is on the verge of launching a new lobbying group intended to undermine Azure’s reputation. Microsoft alleges that this initiative is being organized in collaboration with a European lobbying firm, with an official announcement expected soon. The information regarding this campaign reportedly came from an unnamed European cloud provider that opted not to get involved.

These accusations follow Google’s recent antitrust complaint against Microsoft filed with EU regulators, wherein Google accused Microsoft of engaging in unfair licensing practices concerning Azure. This complaint emerged after Microsoft reached a settlement with CISPE, a consortium of European cloud infrastructure providers that had voiced similar concerns about Microsoft’s licensing strategies.

Furthermore, Microsoft claims that Google actively sought to disrupt its settlement with CISPE in July. The increasing tensions between the two companies may signal a return to their historic rivalry, reminiscent of earlier confrontations such as the “Scroogled” campaign and previous disputes regarding Google services on the Windows Phone platform.
