Microsoft outage causes Frontier airlines to briefly ground all flights

The grounding of Frontier Airlines’ planes was lifted following a technical outage, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported Thursday night. The FAA announced that the ground stop was canceled around 10:30 p.m. EST.

Steve Lambert, a spokesman for Ontario International Airport told that the disruption was specific to Frontier Airlines and did not affect any other airline.

Photographer Brandy Carlos expressed her frustration on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday evening, stating she was unable to fly out of Ontario International Airport because “all the airlines,” except Delta, were down with no flights available.

In a statement on Thursday, Frontier explained, “Our systems are currently impacted by a Microsoft outage, which is also affecting other companies. During this time, booking, check-in, access to your boarding pass, and some flights may be impacted. We appreciate your patience.”

Frontier did not provide a specific timeline for when flights would resume but promised to share updates. They also noted that the outage was affecting other companies as well. Sun Country Airlines mentioned on X that “one of our information vendors is experiencing a global outage affecting multiple airlines. As a result, some of our services are temporarily unavailable. We are working with the third party to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and appreciate your patience.” Sun Country Airlines does not operate out of Ontario.

Roberto Contreras of Victorville reported that his Thursday night flight was delayed.

As of 7 p.m. on Thursday, Ontario International Airport had two canceled flights and 62 delayed flights, according to FlightAware.

Flightradar24 posted on X that the number of flights airborne on Thursday evening was 15, compared to 57 on Wednesday night.

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, most of the flights canceled Thursday evening were Frontier flights. FlightAware recorded seven canceled and 14 delayed Frontier flights at Sky Harbor. The websites for Sun Country Airlines and Allegiant Air were also down, citing the Azure outage. Each airline had one flight delay out of Sky Harbor on Thursday.

Frontier’s website remained functional but displayed a message stating, “Our systems are currently impacted by a Microsoft outage, which is also affecting other companies. We appreciate your patience.”

If your flight was disrupted, reach out to your airline and check your flight status before heading to the airport.
