Microsoft announced Mustafa Suleyman, Co-Founder of DeepMind, to take the helm of its expanding artificial intelligence (AI) division. Suleyman is set to become the new CEO of Microsoft AI, where he will oversee the advancement of several key AI products of the company, such as Copilot, Bing, and Microsoft Edge.
Suleyman, who helped launch DeepMind, a company that rose to prominence in the AI industry following its acquisition by Google (GOOGL) in 2014, departed in 2022 to start inflection with Karén Simonyan. Simonyan, like Suleyman, will be leaving inflection to assume the role of Chief Scientist at Microsoft’s AI unit.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in a memo to employees which was also shared on the company’s blog, highlighted, “We have always prioritized being a platform and partner-led company, and this approach will continue to guide our efforts. Our AI innovation builds on our strategic partnership with OpenAI, including developing AI infrastructure and innovative products based on OpenAI’s models. Today’s news underscores our commitment to these partnerships.”
Alongside Suleyman and Simonyan, an undisclosed number of Inflection’s team will also be joining Microsoft, a move following Microsoft’s investment in Inflection. On the same day, Inflection announced via a blog post, the appointment of former Mozilla executive Sean White as its new CEO.
Reflecting on the transition, Suleyman expressed his enthusiasm on the social media platform X, stating, “It’s been an incredible journey so far, and there is much more ahead. I’m profoundly grateful for everyone’s support as we embark on this new chapter. The best is yet to come.”
