Deepak Goel is set to become the Group Coordinator for the Cyber Laws and Data Governance division at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). He will take over from Sandip Chatterjee, who will retire from MeitY on June 30. As a scientist at the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Deepak Goel develops IT solutions for the government.
MeitY’s Cyber Laws and Data Governance division enforces the 2000 Information Technology Act, supports electronic commerce with legal backing, facilitates e-governance, prevents cybercrimes, and implements security measures.
The IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules of 2021 empower the division to regulate social media and online gaming intermediaries. A Grievance Appellate Committee addresses social media grievances on behalf of Indian users.
This division examines the legal implications of emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, while also advocating for data governance frameworks. It covers aspects of competition law, company law, the Copyright Act, and intellectual property rights protection within the realm of information technology.
