Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu launched the Electronic Personnel License (EPL) for pilots on Thursday, marking a significant step in the digital transformation of India’s aviation sector. With this move, India becomes the second country after China to implement EPL for flight crew.
“The launch of EPL by the DGCA is not just a step forward for aviation, but also for the future of digitalization across sectors,” Naidu stated.
He highlighted that EPL will improve convenience, transparency, and efficiency for pilots while ensuring that India remains at the forefront of aviation technology. Given the rapid growth of the civil aviation sector, Naidu projected that India will require at least 20,000 pilots in the coming years to meet increasing air travel demands.
The minister emphasized aviation’s crucial role in connectivity, economic development, and technological advancement. He noted the sector’s expansion plans, including 50 new airports within five years and the addition of 120 new domestic destinations over the next decade. “As a result, India will need an additional 20,000 pilots, making initiatives like EPL crucial in meeting the demand,” he added.
Discussing future advancements, Naidu highlighted the increasing role of technology in aviation operations and regulation. He also outlined plans for digital twin systems for airports, enabling real-time decision-making and continued adoption of technology-driven solutions.
A senior pilot from an Indian airline welcomed the initiative, stating, “As a pilot, the introduction of the EPL is much anticipated as it will streamline processes and enhance the ability to focus on what truly matters, ensuring safe and efficient travel for all. It also shows the evolving journey of Indian aviation.”
