Google has unveiled a memory feature for its Gemini AI, enabling the chatbot to retain user preferences and interests across conversations. This update places Gemini on par with ChatGPT, which introduced a similar capability earlier this year. By remembering personal details, Gemini aims to offer more personalized and efficient interactions, reducing repetitive explanations.
The memory function works in two ways: users can naturally share information using phrases like “Remember” or “Don’t forget,” or manually input details through the new “Saved Info” page. This stored information allows Gemini to tailor responses, improving relevance and customization. For instance, users can specify preferred response styles, jargon, or even include specific features like language translations.
Google emphasizes transparency and user control. The “Saved Info” page lets users view, edit, or delete stored details, and Gemini provides notifications whenever saved information is utilized. However, questions remain about whether deleted data is entirely removed from Google’s servers.
Currently, the memory feature is exclusive to Gemini Advanced users through the $20/month Google One AI Premium Plan. It is available in English and limited to the web version. While this update strengthens Gemini’s competitiveness, it underscores ongoing concerns about data privacy in AI-powered tools.
