Chevron Invests $1 Billion to Establish ENGINE Innovation Hub in India

Chevron is making a significant strategic investment in India, committing $1 billion to establish its largest engineering and innovation centre outside the United States. The Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (ENGINE) in Bengaluru is set to become a cutting-edge technology hub, leveraging India’s highly skilled talent pool in engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital solutions to drive global energy advancements. This bold move underscores Chevron’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence in the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

The ENGINE centre will play a crucial role in supporting Chevron’s global projects and operations through state-of-the-art research in oil and gas exploration, carbon capture, and digital transformation. Akshay Sahni, India Head at Chevron, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “ENGINE is a state-of-the-art technology hub to support Chevron’s global projects and operations.” The investment will be allocated over multiple years, focusing on enhancing Chevron’s capabilities in digital twins for refineries, advanced process monitoring, and supply chain optimization.

One of the key functions of ENGINE will be real-time seismic data analysis, AI-driven predictive maintenance, and subsurface geological research. This will directly support Chevron’s high-pressure deepwater drilling initiatives and large-scale carbon sequestration projects. With AI, IoT, and edge computing at the core of its operations, the centre aims to streamline global energy operations, ensuring greater efficiency and reliability. Additionally, a dedicated AI accelerator within ENGINE will focus on predictive analytics, analyzing real-time data from vibration monitoring, temperature fluctuations, and pressure readings to optimize exploration and production strategies.

Chevron’s commitment to innovation is reflected in its ambitious hiring plans. The company aims to onboard 600 professionals by 2025, spanning various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, chemical, petroleum, civil, and structural engineering. The centre will also bring in experts from fields such as computer science, geology, and environmental science. These specialists will collaborate on projects like developing digital twins for LNG plants, which will be instrumental in improving energy efficiency and monitoring emissions.

Beyond technological advancements, the ENGINE centre aligns with India’s broader vision of affordable and clean energy. Sahni highlighted this alignment, noting that “India’s vision of affordable and clean energy aligns with ENGINE’s mission to deliver innovative solutions for a lower-carbon future.” As the global energy sector undergoes a transformative shift toward sustainability, Chevron’s ENGINE initiative is set to be at the forefront of pioneering AI-driven innovations, robotics, and high-performance computing in energy management and resource optimization.

With this investment, Chevron is not only strengthening its operational capabilities but also positioning India as a vital hub for energy technology and research. By fostering collaboration between experts worldwide, the ENGINE centre will contribute to shaping the future of sustainable energy solutions, reinforcing Chevron’s leadership in innovation, digital transformation, and responsible energy practices.
