Barracuda adds new data protection features to its email security lineup for Indian businesses

Barracuda Networks, a US-based cybersecurity firm, has expanded its email security offerings for Indian enterprises, the company announced on Thursday.

These new solutions are designed to help businesses comply with India’s data protection regulations by providing advanced email protection, data classification, and email archiving services. Additionally, customer data can now be stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS) located in India, meeting the country’s growing security and compliance needs amid its rapidly expanding digital economy. This new data residency option will particularly benefit organizations in heavily regulated sectors like healthcare, finance, and the public domain by defending against email-borne cyber-attacks and enabling automatic data scrutiny in Microsoft 365 OneDrive and SharePoint.

“India is a flourishing center of digital transformation and innovation, making it a prime target for cyber threats,” said Parag Khurana, India’s Country Manager at Barracuda.

According to a report released by the company in May, there has been a concerning rise in email-based attacks, with cybercriminals increasingly using generative artificial intelligence to create sophisticated phishing and business email compromise attacks.

The Top Email Threats and Trends Report, which analyzed 69 million email-based attacks across 4.5 million mailboxes over a year, found that scamming and phishing emails now make up 86% of social engineering attacks. Business Email Communications (BEC) attacks account for 10.6% of these incidents, while conversation hijacking cases have increased by 70% since 2022.

Khurana noted that in India, most CEOs rank cloud-related threats as their top concern. “We are helping companies address this issue and comply with current regulations like the DPDPA. The new data residency in India allows us to extend our cloud-based email protection and archiving to a wider customer base across the nation.”

Barracuda’s advanced security portfolio can help companies comply with DPDPA requirements for data protection, threat mitigation, secure access to personal data, and data retention, documentation, and retrieval requirements, the company said.

In addition to Barracuda, Check Point Software, a cybersecurity provider, announced in April the release of new email security features, enhancing its email portfolio to improve collaborative email security against cyber-attacks. These additions provide high-end protection against sophisticated threats from a single interface.
