Asian News International Sues OpenAI Over Copyright Infringement

Asian News International (ANI), one of India’s largest news agencies, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI company of using its copyrighted content without permission to train its models, including ChatGPT. ANI claims the AI generated false information, including fabricated interviews attributed to its reporters, which could harm its reputation. The case, heard in the Delhi High Court, is the first of its kind in India and may set a precedent for AI’s use of copyrighted material in the country.

The lawsuit alleges that ANI’s content was used without consent and that ChatGPT’s “hallucinations” of fake news pose risks to public order. During a hearing, Justice Amit Bansal noted the case’s complexity and scheduled the next hearing for January. OpenAI defended its practices, stating that copyright laws do not protect facts and allowing websites to opt out of data collection. The company also argued that the case lacked jurisdiction, as it does not have servers in India.

The lawsuit highlights growing global concerns over AI’s use of copyrighted material, with OpenAI facing similar lawsuits in the US, Canada, and Germany. The court will appoint an expert to review copyright implications in future hearings.
