Elon Musk has reported that social media platform X has been targeted by a large-scale cyber attack, describing it as an incident that required “a lot of resources” to execute.
Musk suggested that the attack was likely carried out by “either a large, coordinated group and/or a country,” adding, “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Tracing…”
Later, in an interview with Fox News, Musk stated that the IP addresses involved in the attack were traced to locations “in the Ukraine area.”
The incident comes amid rising tensions as the US government has recently restricted Ukraine’s access to satellite imagery and paused intelligence sharing, increasing pressure on Kyiv.
Hacking Group Claims Responsibility
A group known as Dark Storm Team initially claimed responsibility for the attack in a Telegram post, which has since been deleted.
According to Downdetector.com, around 40,000 users reported issues accessing X on Monday, with outage complaints peaking at approximately 10 AM and 2 PM in the UK.
A source from the internet infrastructure industry told Reuters that the platform was hit by multiple waves of denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, beginning at around 9:45 AM.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre explains that DoS attacks aim to overwhelm a website or network, either slowing it down or making it completely inaccessible. While these attacks may not always be highly sophisticated, they can lead to major disruptions.
