Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon (AMZN.O), is set to invest approximately $8.2 billion in Maharashtra over the next few years, as announced by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Monday.
India has been actively promoting local cloud data storage, with its cloud services market valued at $8.3 billion in 2023. According to a report by the International Data Corporation, this market is projected to reach $24.2 billion by 2028. “Along with the investment, there will be significant growth in employment,” stated Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, noting that the rollout of investments will extend through 2029-2030.
AWS plans to introduce advanced cloud management services, deploy its own graphics processing units, and implement the latest technologies in India, Vaishnaw added.
The company currently operates two data centers in the country—one in Mumbai, launched in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, which became operational in 2022.
In a separate development last year, Amazon committed an additional $2 billion to India, aiming to strengthen its e-commerce operations in the world’s third-largest economy.
