MeitY Invites Proposals for ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ to Promote Ethical and Secure AI Adoption

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has launched a significant initiative under its IndiaAI mission, issuing a call for proposals to promote the ethical and secure adoption of artificial intelligence in India. The ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ program seeks contributions from organizations, startups, and academic institutions to develop innovative solutions across various critical themes.

Key focus areas include watermarking AI-generated content, establishing ethical AI frameworks, creating risk assessment tools, developing stress-testing methodologies, and implementing deepfake detection systems. These efforts aim to address the growing challenges posed by AI technologies, particularly the misuse of deepfakes in spreading misinformation.

For deepfake detection, MeitY envisions a tool capable of seamless integration into browsers and social media platforms for cross-platform content verification. The proposed solution should leverage advanced deep learning algorithms, provenance-based methods, and inference techniques to detect manipulations in media. Such integration would enable real-time detection, enhancing the digital information ecosystem’s security and integrity.

The initiative also emphasizes the development of watermarking and labeling tools to differentiate between AI-generated and user-generated content. These tools are expected to embed imperceptible markers into AI-generated content to ensure traceability and security.

In addition to technical tools, MeitY aims to establish ethical AI frameworks that prioritize fairness, transparency, and accountability while mitigating bias and discrimination. The frameworks will guide developers and researchers in addressing the broader societal implications of AI technologies, promoting informed and responsible decision-making.

The proposals will be evaluated through a rigorous multi-step process by a multidisciplinary committee of experts. Applicants will be assessed on their alignment with mission objectives, innovation, technical feasibility, data relevance, and collaborative potential. Proposals must demonstrate a clear impact on ethical AI development, scalability, and practicality while adhering to a defined budget and timeline.

The deadline for submissions is January 10, 2025. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to fostering responsible AI innovation while addressing the risks associated with its rapid adoption.
