The Future of Human – AI partnership

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing our life and the way we do business. On the personal front, AI powered voice assistants, personalized recommendations around health, education, shopping, content creation etc. are transforming lives. We also see how AI is changing industries, from healthcare to finance, to media. It can increase productivity and create new revenue streams. And it can rapidly sift through enormous, highly complex sets of data to provide companies with deep insights.

Beyond 2024, as GenAI further evolves, we can expect progressive improvements in quality and speed. The next area of focus lies in combining logical reasoning and sense-making with emotion and intuitive systems, removing any bias. But this remains a tough challenge to solve given the complexity & incomplete understanding of our own cognitive process.

On the ubiquitous question “Will AI replace humans”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is unlikely to replace humans because of several reasons – am highlighting what I think are Top 5:

  • One of the main reasons why AI cannot replace human beings is the lack of Imagination & Creativity. Humans possess a unique ability to think creatively and come up with new and original ideas, visualizing things that do not exist. Creativity is a complex human trait that is influenced by various factors such as emotions, culture, and experiences. It involves thinking outside the box, exploring new ideas, and taking risks. While AI can analyse data, identify patterns and trends, and even generate new ideas based on existing data, it lacks the ability to think outside the box and come up with truly original and creative ideas. AI relies on pre-programmed algorithms that limit its ability to think creatively.
  • Another reason why AI cannot replace human beings is the lack of emotional intelligence. While AI can recognize and respond to basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, and anger, it lacks the ability to understand complex human emotions such as love, jealousy, and guilt. Emotional intelligence is essential in various fields such as counselling, coaching, and leadership, which require human touch and empathy.
  • Contextual understanding is another area where AI falls short when compared to humans. While AI can analyse large amounts of data and identify trends, it lacks the ability to understand the context behind the data. Contextual understanding refers to the ability to interpret complex situations that require subjective judgment, such as understanding the nuances and complexities of human behaviour, cultural norms, and social dynamics.
  • Common sense & intuition are human traits that AI lacks. Common sense refers to the ability to make judgments and decisions based on experience and practicality, and Intuition involves using past experiences and knowledge to make quick and accurate decisions in a given situation. While AI can be programmed with a lot of knowledge and data, it lacks the ability to use common sense, intuition, experiential reasoning to make decisions in a given situation.
  • Ethics is another area where AI cannot replace humans. Ethics refers to the principles that govern human behaviour and decision-making. It involves distinguishing right from wrong and making decisions that align with moral values. While AI can be programmed with ethical principles, it lacks the ability to make judgments based on moral values. For example, an AI system may be programmed to prioritize the safety of passengers in a self-driving car, but it may not be able to make a moral judgment if a situation arises where it has to choose between the safety of its passengers and the safety of pedestrians. Ethics is essential in various fields such as medicine, law, and journalism, where decisions have far-reaching consequences.
Visualizing Human-AI partnership in 2030

Even though the entire world is buzzing about artificial intelligence right now, the number of touchpoints that the average person actually has with cutting-edge AI systems today is limited: the occasional query to a Gen AI engine or query platform perhaps.

By the year 2030, I foresee this will change significantly.

We will use AIs as our personal assistants, our tutors, our career counsellors, our therapists, our accountants, our lawyers.

They will be ubiquitous in our work lives: conducting analyses, writing code, building products, selling products, supporting customers, coordinating across teams and organizations, making strategic decisions.

In conclusion, AI technology has come a long way and is capable of performing various tasks. However, the idea that AI can replace humans is flawed. AI lacks many of the essential human traits that are required in various fields such as creativity, emotional intelligence, contextual understanding, common sense, adaptability, ethics, intuition, physical dexterity, interpersonal skills, adaptability to change, imagination, and free will. While AI can assist humans in various fields, it cannot replace them. The future of AI should be focused on complementing and enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them. AI Won’t Replace Humans — however Humans augmented by AI will replace Humans without AI.
