UnitedHealthcare CEO Shot and Killed in Manhattan

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, in what police are calling a “targeted attack.” The shooting occurred as Thompson walked toward the Hilton Midtown, where his company’s annual investor conference was being held. The gunman, who was masked and waiting in the cold, shot Thompson from behind, striking him in the back and leg. Despite immediate medical attention, Thompson was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West.

Authorities are still investigating the motive and have not identified the shooter, though clues, including a phone and a water bottle left behind by the suspect, may help lead to the assailant. Surveillance video shows the gunman, who appeared to have firearm training, shooting Thompson with a malfunctioning silenced gun before fleeing on foot and then by electric bike.

Thompson’s wife, Paulette, confirmed there had been threats against him, although these did not directly target him. UnitedHealth Group, aware of such threats, had security measures in place, but Thompson was without his security detail at the time of the attack. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
