As Guyana’s economy undergoes a remarkable transformation following its 2019 offshore oil discovery, India is eager to expand its partnership with the nation, capitalizing on opportunities across energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and education sectors. In anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Guyana, Dr. Amit Telang, India’s High Commissioner, highlighted the growing economic collaboration between the two countries and the potential for mutual growth.
Guyana’s burgeoning oil sector is central to this evolving partnership, with India recognizing the nation as a valuable oil producer. India’s oil imports from Guyana began in 2021-22, marking the start of a robust energy relationship, and further expansion of Guyana’s production capacity is expected to bolster these ties. India is also collaborating with Guyanese businesses to deepen its engagement in the oil and gas industry, paving the way for long-term cooperation.
Beyond energy, Guyana’s rapid economic growth has opened doors for Indian businesses in sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, and education. Bilateral trade reached USD 106 million in 2023-24, showing a 60% growth from the previous year. Indian exports to Guyana, including machinery and pharmaceuticals, are complementing Guyana’s exports of bauxite, iron, and steel. With the rise of large-scale infrastructure projects, there are abundant opportunities for Indian firms to contribute to Guyana’s modernization.
The partnership also extends to food security, with India’s support in agricultural cooperation, including millet cultivation, as well as expertise in agro-processing. Both countries are exploring renewable energy projects such as solar energy to promote sustainable development.
In defense, India’s support has included the provision of Dornier aircraft and training programs, strengthening mutual trust and security. The two countries are also focused on cybersecurity, with India offering training to Guyanese and regional officials.
Educational exchanges are another cornerstone of the partnership, with over 100 Guyanese professionals benefiting annually from India’s technical cooperation programs. Collaborations between Indian universities and Guyanese institutions are expanding to include online courses, fostering skill development and cultural ties.
Looking forward, the strategic cooperation between India and Guyana shows immense potential in multiple sectors, underscoring the shared commitment to sustainable growth and development.
