Google Fi wireless has introduced a security feature called ‘Number Lock’ to help users protect against the growing threat of SIM swapping. SIM swapping occurs when a malicious actor convinces your carrier to transfer your phone number to a new SIM card in their possession, potentially giving them access to your calls, texts, two-factor authentication codes, and even financial accounts linked to your number.
Google Fi’s Number Lock acts as a digital safeguard against such attempts. Once activated, this feature locks your phone number to your existing SIM card, preventing any attempts to transfer your number to a new SIM—even through customer service—unless you disable Number Lock. This added layer of security makes it significantly harder for fraudsters to hijack your phone number.
Activating Number Lock is simple. Google Fi users can manage the feature through their online account or the Fi app. Upon enabling the feature, users will receive a confirmation notification, providing peace of mind that their number is locked and protected.
